Gastric Bypass/Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass

Gastric bypass surgery makes the stomach smaller and allows food to bypass part of the small intestine. There is a sense of fullness more quickly than when the stomach was its original size; reducing the amount of food consumed and thus the calories consumed. Bypassing part of the intestine also results in fewer calories being absorbed.

Research indicates that gastric bypass surgery improves insulin resistance and secretion by mechanisms independent of weight loss – most likely involving changes in gastrointestinal hormones. Many patients with type 2 diabetes experience complete remission within days of metabolic surgery, long before significant weight comes off. These metabolic changes enhance weight loss and the improvement or resolution of type II diabetes.

On average, patients can expect to lose between 60% - 70% of their excess weight in the first year. Gastric bypass surgery is performed in most cases with minimally invasive or laparoscopic surgery. This greatly reduces discomfort and recovery time.

Gastric Sleeve/Sleeve Gastrectomy

The Gastric Sleeve surgery is performed by removing approximately 60% or more of the stomach.  This leaves a banana shaped and sized pouch or “sleeve” as the new stomach which extends from the natural stomach opening to the natural stomach outlet.  The procedure helps individuals to lose weight because the overall size of the stomach is decreased, controlling the amount of food that can be consumed.  The sensations of hunger are also controlled by this procedure because the portion of the stomach that produces the hunger-stimulating hormone is removed.

On average, patients who only undergo the initial procedure can expect to lose about  60% of their excess weight in the first two years.

Adjustable Gastric Band/Lap Band/Realize Band

Adjustable gastric band surgery, also known as laparoscopic gastric band, gastric band or lap band is a restrictive surgical procedure in which a band is placed around the upper part of the stomach.  This creates a new small stomach pouch and leaves the larger part of the stomach below the band. The food storage area in the stomach is reduced since the pouch above the band can hold only a small amount of food. The band also controls the rate at which food empties out of the smaller upper stomach. Ultimately, less food is consumed.

The lap band can be adjusted to alter the size of the opening between the small upper stomach and the lower stomach. The surgeon does this through a port placed in the wall of the abdomen just beneath the skin. The band can be removed, but this surgery should be considered a permanent procedure.

Lap band surgery is typically performed laparoscopically and has a short recovery period. It typically results in a loss of 40% of excess weight. Weight loss occurs more slowly than after other bariatric procedures, but because the procedure can be less invasive and can be removed if needed, it is an ideal option for many patients.

Revision/Conversion

Bariatric surgery is usually very successful, both in terms of helping a patient achieve significant weight loss and minimizing health problems associated with obesity. Occasionally patients experience problems with the surgery or are not successful in losing the expected amount of excess weight. In these situations, bariatric surgery revision may be necessary to alter or repair the initial bariatric surgery.

Adjustable Gastric Band Port Revision

The port is placed under the skin and is the avenue for fluids to be added or taken out of the band. If the port flips, dislodges, or malfunctions an easy procedure can be done to correct the problem.

Doctor Search

Everyone needing specialty surgery knows how important it is to select the right surgeon. Not only is surgical skill critical, but having a surgeon and surgical team with a great deal of experience because they do large numbers of the surgery you need is also essential to obtaining the best outcome. There is an old saying that goes, ”If you are having surgery it is a minor case, but if I am having surgery it is a major case.” At FHMC we understand that every case should be treated as a major case. You deserve not only the best surgeon, but also a surgeon you have had a chance to spend the time needed to have all of your questions answered so you are comfortable and confident about your decision.

The physician owners of FHMC have control over the selection and recruitment of the staff who will be members of their surgical team. While it is true that the surgeon is the team leader, every great surgeon knows that they need a great support team to deliver the best surgical outcomes and the best care. Our nurses, therapists, medical assistants, and technicians have joined the FHMC family because they want to work with each specialist and be an important part of delivering outstanding service to you as their patient. These staff members are selected not only for their skill and commitment to their specialty but also because of their desire to provide you the personal care you need and desire. As a specialty hospital, each staff member has a specialty they are trained to care for and therefore this staff has a higher level of skill to care for you than would be typically available in a general hospital or even a university hospital because their staff is required to support many different programs. In addition, to a higher skill level, our hospitals have higher nurse to patient ratios which means they have more time to care for you. The majority of your care is provided by a nurse instead of lower skilled aid. With the best staffing programs our patients can immediately see and feel the difference in their care.
