Reduction Mammoplasty/Breast Reduction

The keyhole pattern (or pattern of Wise), skin incisions are used to remove not only extra skin, but to remove extra glandular tissue in order to lift the breast and make it smaller. Extra skin vertically makes the breast sag more. Extra skin horizontally makes the breast wider and flatter. The incisions encircle the nipple and pass from the bottom of the nipple to the breast fold underneath and run along the breast fold.

Mastopexy/Breast Lift

The mastopexy operation involves removal of the extra skin surrounding the glandular tissue of the breast in a pattern that tightens the skin vertically and horizontally. This often utilizes a "keyhole" pattern of skin removal that leaves a skin closure suture line around the nipple, along the fold below the breast, and an additional vertical incision connecting the bottom of the nipple circle to the fold. Only the outside skin is removed. The glandular tissue (the volume of the breast) is preserved. The incisions are designed to be covered by underclothing and clothes but are visible without clothing.

Breast Augmentation/Breast Enlargement

Breast volume is increased by the placement of saltwater filled (saline) or silicone gel filled implants under the chest tissues to replace volume in the breast lost through weight loss. The location of the incisions is chosen to hide it using local anatomic folds or landmarks.

Scar Revision

Scars are an unavoidable result of injury or surgery. Scars may be particularly noticeable because of their size, shape, color, texture or location. Scar revision surgery is used to minimize the scar so that it blends in with the surrounding skin and is less noticeable; it cannot be completely erased.

Breast Augmentation Mastopexy

A breast lift procedure is combined with volume augmentation using a breast implant. The excess skin, allowing the breast to droop and sag, is trimmed in a pattern that repositions the breast glandular tissue and nipple. A pocket is made under the chest tissues for placement of a saline or silicone gel filled implant to add needed volume to the breasts.

Supraorbital Muscle Weakening

Weakening the supraorbital muscles reduces frown lines. This can be done via surgical procedures or carbon dioxide laser and is often a component of a brow lift.

Tissue Expanders—Placement and Removal

Controlled skin stretching results in new skin growth that matches the color, texture and thickness of the surrounding skin. This is most often accomplished by the insertion of an inflatable expander beneath the skin with period injections of saline solutions to slowly stretch the skin. This procedure is used for many cosmetic purposes and to replace skin lost from trauma, wounds, surgery or burns.

Wound Exploration

Wound exploration may be done to determine the extent of the injury by examining the tissues and structures involved.

Cystectomy

A cystectomy is the removal of the bladder in part or in its entirety. A urinary diversion or neobladder procedure may accompany a cystectomy.

Excision of Lesion

Lesions are infected or diseased patches of skin. Excision is the removal of this skin patch because it has become painful, unsightly, has the potential to turn cancerous or is cancerous. It can also be excised to diagnose the lesion.

Nose - Rhinoplasty

A rhinoplasty is a procedure for correcting and reconstructing the form, restoring the functions, and enhancing the appearance of the nose.

Panniculectomy/Abdominoplasty/Tummy Tuck

The abdominal pannus is the loose fold of skin that hangs over the pubis following significant weight loss.  It consists of skin and fat tissue.  Stretching of the rectus muscles (the sit up or "six pack" muscles) to the side may contribute to the fullness in the lower abdomen. Panniculectomy is the term used for the surgical removal of the abdominal pannus.  It uses an incision which passes from hip to hip across the pubis along its lower edge.  The upper incision passes from each hip to the belly button area.  The skin and fat between these surgical incisions is removed.  The expanse of skin above the belly button is loosened from the underlying abdominal muscle.  If the muscles can be tightened, they are pulled to the middle with sutures.  Hernias, which can occur after bariatric surgery, can be repaired as well.  The upper edge is pulled downward to tighten the abdomen.  The belly button is brought through the skin.

The incisions are designed to be hidden in the groin and pubic creases and to be covered by clothes and sportswear.  Multiple layers of sutures are used to close the wound and produce a narrow scar.

Lower Body Lift

The lower body lift surgical procedure tightens loose, sagging skin in the buttocks, posterior thigh, hips, outer thigh, and anterior thigh.  It utilizes incisions which pass from the back around the hips to the front of the thighs.  The loose skin, as well as underlying fat tissue, is removed from below the incision to allow suspension of the remaining tissue to stretch and smooth the lower body, especially the buttocks and thighs.  The surgery is begun in the patient’s back and requires repositioning during the surgery to address the hips and outer thighs and front of the thighs.  It can be combined with an abdominal skin tightening, if needed.  If a previous abdominoplasty has been performed or is not needed, the lower body lift can be extended to tighten the inner thighs.

The incisions are designed to be hidden by clothing and sportswear or to lay in normally occurring anatomic folds.  Layered suture techniques are used to carefully close the wounds in order to maintain the lift, tightening and smoothing the remaining skin.

Arm Lift/Brachioplasty

Weight loss in the arms will thin the fat layer below the skin and allow gravity to pull the skin downward. This creates a vertical looseness on the underside, or triceps muscle side, of the upper arm. Brachioplasty (arm lift) involves removal of this skin from the inner surface of the arm in a long tapered spindle pattern. The incision closure falls on the inside of the arm in the groove between the biceps and triceps muscles. A drain is placed under the skin, entering near the armpit. Compression garments are utilized to smooth the skin and provide pressure around the area to lessen swelling. Surgery is usually done as an outpatient procedure (unless other procedures are done at the same time).

Otoplasty

Otoplasty is the surgical or non-surgical correction of deformities or defect of the outer ear. This usually involves the reshaping, moving or augmenting of the ear cartilage.

I & D of Abscess or Seroma

This procedure involves the incision and drainage of an infectious accumulation of fluid (an abscess) or a non-infectious fluid accumulation (seroma).

Steroid Injection

Thickened hypertrophic scars may be treated with a steroid injection to soften and flatten the scar.

Cranial Bone Graft to Nose

When augmentation to the nose is required as part of rhinoplasty, cranial bone grafts are most often used.

Chin Implant—Placement or Removal

Chin augmentation using implants can provide a better balance of facial features. Bone is used from the patients’ own rib or pelvis to achieve a noticeable change to the face silhouette.

Cheek Augmentation

Cheek augmentation is a cosmetic procedure used to emphasize the cheeks. This may be done with a solid implant placed over the cheekbone, fat injections or a soft tissue filler. It may be done as a solo procedure or in combination with other cosmetic procedures.

Cauterization of Turbinates—Part of Rhinoplasty

Turbinate cautery is a method for reducing bulky turbinates, the air-conditioning tissue in the nose. This may be done to reduce nasal airway blockage.

Hydroxyapatite Facial Augmentation

Bone loss is a normal part of aging and augmentation is often used to replace lost bone or to create greater contour as part of facial cosmetic surgery. Hydroxyapatite is a product derived from coral that can be molded to the correct shape and then applied to the bone to build it up.

Excision of Mass

This procedure is the surgical removal of a mass.

Botox Injections

Botox is injected in small doses to specific muscles as a cosmetic or medical treatment. The injections block nerve signals that cause the muscle to contract resulting in muscle paralysis. Botox is used medically to treat neck pain due to muscle spasms, lazy eye, eyelid twitching, finger, elbow and wrist muscle stiffness, excessive underarm sweating, and chronic migraine. Cosmetically, it is effective in relaxing facial muscles of the forehead, and sides of eyes making wrinkles in those areas less noticeable.

Buttocks Lift

A buttocks lift improves the contour of the buttocks and can be performed as a solo procedure or as part of the lower body lift. The procedure is done by removing excess skin and tightening the skin above the upper part of the buttocks. Liposuction is sometimes used as part of this procedure. A Brazilian buttocks lift provides added volume, projection and lift to the buttocks via fat injections or implants.

Canthopexy

Canthopexy is an eyelid surgery that strengthens the lateral canthal tendon, the lateral retinaculum and the orbicularis muscle in order to help maintain the correct position of the eyelid. It is often used as part of the lower eyelid blepharoplasty.

Dermabrasion

Dermabrasion is a surgical procedure that involves the controlled abrasion of the upper layers of the skin to remove small scars, moles, tattoos or fine wrinkles.

Hernia Repair

A hernia can occur when inner layers of abdominal muscle are weak causing the lining of the abdomen to bulge out into a small sac. Part of the intestine or abdominal tissue may enter the sac. Hernias occur most often in the groin (inguinal hernia), the navel (umbilical hernia), and at the incision site of a previous surgery (ventral hernia).

Glabellar Muscle Incision

The glabellar muscles are the responsible for forehead and brow frown lines. An incision can be made to reduce these muscles while still allowing for facial expression. This procedure results in a rested and youthful appearance.

Forehead Lift

A forehead lift corrects sagging of the forehead skin, eyebrows, and upper eyelids. It can be done as a solo procedure or in combination with other cosmetic procedures.

Earlobe Repair

A cosmetic procedure used to repair gauged, stretched or split earlobes due to piercings or to shorten or reduce the earlobe.

Dermal Grafting

Dermal grafting uses your own skin as filler in various cosmetic procedures. It is often used to treat acne scaring.

Doctor Search

Everyone needing specialty surgery knows how important it is to select the right surgeon. Not only is surgical skill critical, but having a surgeon and surgical team with a great deal of experience because they do large numbers of the surgery you need is also essential to obtaining the best outcome. There is an old saying that goes, ”If you are having surgery it is a minor case, but if I am having surgery it is a major case.” At FHMC we understand that every case should be treated as a major case. You deserve not only the best surgeon, but also a surgeon you have had a chance to spend the time needed to have all of your questions answered so you are comfortable and confident about your decision.

The physician owners of FHMC have control over the selection and recruitment of the staff who will be members of their surgical team. While it is true that the surgeon is the team leader, every great surgeon knows that they need a great support team to deliver the best surgical outcomes and the best care. Our nurses, therapists, medical assistants, and technicians have joined the FHMC family because they want to work with each specialist and be an important part of delivering outstanding service to you as their patient. These staff members are selected not only for their skill and commitment to their specialty but also because of their desire to provide you the personal care you need and desire. As a specialty hospital, each staff member has a specialty they are trained to care for and therefore this staff has a higher level of skill to care for you than would be typically available in a general hospital or even a university hospital because their staff is required to support many different programs. In addition, to a higher skill level, our hospitals have higher nurse to patient ratios which means they have more time to care for you. The majority of your care is provided by a nurse instead of lower skilled aid. With the best staffing programs our patients can immediately see and feel the difference in their care.
